Responding
In light of rumors and hysteria that has leaked its way into the mainstream media, I thought it appropriate to state my case – in my own way, on my terms.
Responding through the media was never an option for me, mostly because I have an intimate understanding of how journalism works in this country. Newspaper writers and television anchors will argue the public has a right to know, when the reality is they merely want to stir the pot, create controversy and make their corporate parent as much cash as possible.
If I deny the charges, no one will believe me. Any explanation otherwise would be ignored in favor of the extreme “He did it, he’s obviously a terrorist” angle that’s suddenly become so popular.
How do I know all this? Well, for those of you who don’t read the Tribune, I used to be a member of the mainstream media. I wasn’t fired, either; I resigned from the newspaper in Las Vegas because I simply lost the stomach for it.
However, there was one thing Ebenezer Watson, the “esteemed” columnist for the Tribune, was right about: I am, in fact, a former Watcher. As such, wouldn’t I be vigilant in my hiring practices, particularly considering the delicate nature of much of this store’s merchandise? Any hiring I do with regards to this store is done only after an exhaustive check to ensure that not only am I employing a competent person, but also one who will not in any way endanger my customers.
I opened Thoth’s Library to help people; putting them at risk goes against everything this store and I stand for. At this point, all I can tell you is that there are no moral absolutes in this situation; things are not cut-and-dry, black and white. Appearances can often be deceiving, and things are rarely as simple as everyone would like them to be.
This store is not closing, nor will any of its employees be relieved of their duties. We will still be open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The protestors will be allowed to stand outside of the store and make their case – far be it for me to infringe upon their rights of expression – so long as they do not become a hazard to our customers or those of surrounding establishments.
In short, I’m not letting this affect the way I do things, and I hope you don’t, either.
Sincerely,
Logan Guevera
owner and founder, Thoth’s Library
